Malvern Prep, facing the pressure of being top-ranked in every major poll at a national venue, used a 6-0 first-half surge to break open a tight game and claimed a 9-6 win over MIAA power Boys’ Latin (MD) today at Tierney Field in Sparks, MD.

The Friars ranked No.1 by Phillylacrosse.com – and more notably on the national scale – now No. 1 in the country both by USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse, improved to 2-0. Boys’ Latin, ranked No. 13 by Inside Lacrosse and No. 16 by USA Lacrosse, fell to 2-1.
Danny Lucovich led Malvern with three goals, while Mike Ortlieb and Jake Bickel each had two goals and two assists. Chase Deves and Owen Mears also scored, and Will Tantillo (SSMF) and Dylan Novak each had three ground balls. Heath Jones posted 7 saves to earn the win in goal and Malvern won 12 of 18 faceoffs as Matthew Connolly took 8 of 12.
The Friars trailed, 3-2, late in the first period when Lucovich tied it before the buzzer. Lucovich tallied his third goal to make it 4-3 off an Ortlieb feed, and Bickel pushed the lead to 5-3. Bickel then fed Ortlieb for a 6-3 lead, and Turley found Deves for a 7-3 lead before Ortlieb pushed the margin to 8-3 before the half on a Bickel dish.
