In February 2005, there were only 16 players on the Upper Merion roster.
“We weren’t even sure if we were going to start a team,” said UM coach Brady McCormick.
The Vikings, however, finished that year with 34 players. And when a seventh and eighth grade was started the following year, the sport was assured.
Today, the youth program extends down to kindergarten, guaranteeing a long line of experienced players in the future.
“It ballooned really, really quickly,” said McCormick.

With the help of a number of dedicated lacrosse leaders, a former Villanova player and a large group of enthusiastic young players, the Audenried boys’ lacrosse team faced off for its first game Saturday in the first Public League season.
Audenried opened its season with an 11-1 loss to George Washington as part of a boys’ doubleheader at the South Philly SuperSite. But the debut was an occasion for celebration in a new league that features six teams.

The Prep, having lost in overtime to the nation’s top-rated team, Haverford School, on Saturday, appeared to have its best shot at beating the seven-time Catholic League champions after falling to their nemesis 13 straight times.
“It’s a good win, it’s against a good team and we have another one on Saturday,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy, whose team faces nationally-ranked Wilton (Ct.) at the Haverford School “Checking For Cancer” Invitational. “Everybody makes a big deal (about the La Salle-Prep rivalry), but it’s another game on the schedule.

Haverford School is hosting the 4th annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational (sponsored by Nike) Saturday, when many of the top boys’ lacrosse teams will compete for on a stage that also can help save lives.

Aside from great competition, the primary purpose and motivation behind the formation of CFC is to promote awareness of Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular Cancers.
Haverford School coach John Nostrant, a prostate cancer survivor, and close friend Kevin Giblin, the coach at Georgetown Prep, created the tourney to raise awareness for early detection of the three men’s cancers and all cancer.
4/13/13 – Checking for Cancer: Haverford School tops Salisbury School (CT), 13-11
After an 0-3 start, the Haverford School lacrosse team has begun to come of age.
The host Fords won their seventh straight game today, defeating New England power Salisbury School (CT), 13-11, before a large crowd at the 5th Annual “Checking for Cancer” Nike Invitational.

The game was one of four boys’ games and nine overall played in an event to raise awareness for three men’s cancers: Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular. Haverford’s head coach, John Nostrant, is a Prostate cancer survivor and a founder of the invitational.
Nostrant, a member of the Eastern PA Chapter of the US Hall of Fame, has been forced to work hard this year rebuilding a team that features many freshmen and sophomore regulars as well as juniors that had played little varsity lacrosse.

This one was for Nick.
Matt Borchert had four goals and an assist and Lou Harrison tallied four goals while Dawson Faust posted 15 saves as host Ridley toppled Abington, 11-8, Saturday in the Relentless Cup High School Game.

The game was part of a full day HEADstrong Foundation event that featured youth games and a special college game between Lehigh and Georgetown Saturday night. Proceeds went to the HEADstrong Foundation’s fight against blood cancer.
For Ridley, the win means a lot. Last Saturday the Green Raiders were handily defeated in the HEADstrong Rivalry Games by host Avon Grove. Nick Colleluori would have been proud of Saturday’s effort as Ridley controlled it from the start.
