Women’s college honors: Delaware’s McCartney (Arch. Wood), UNC’s Corzel (Merion Mercy)

Following two wins over Monmouth and Denver this past week, the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team swept Colonial Athletic Association weekly accolades as sophomore Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) was named Co-Player of the Week while freshman Kara Dattellas earned Rookie of the Week honors.

The 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year, McCartney began her second season of collegiate play with continued success as she became the first Delaware player to start the season with three straight hat tricks since All-American Missy Meharg scored three or more goals in each of the first five games of the 1985 season.

McCartney, who shared CAA weekly honors with Drexel’s Kelli Joran (Downingtown East), picked up three goals each in a 14-6 win at Monmouth and a 7-6 victory over Denver this past week. Last week, the midfielder put up a career-high five goals against No. 15 Georgetown. She currently has nine career hat tricks in just 18 career outings and currently leads the team Blue Hens with 11 goals on the year.

In the team’s nail-biter win against Denver, McCartney posted the first goal for either team in the second half to give Delaware the 6-5 lead that they would never relinquish. In addition to the six goals scored, McCartney finished the week with four groundballs, four caused turnovers, and one draw control.

UNC’s Corzel (Merion Mercy) is Defenisve Player of Week

North Carolina sophomore midfielder Margaret Corzel has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

Corzel had primary responsibility for marking Northwestern All-American attacker Erin Fitzgerald in Friday’s 11-8 Tar Heel win over top-ranked Northwestern. Corzel limited her to one goal on three shots with three turnovers in North Carolina’s 11-8 win over No. 1 Northwestern. The native of Berwyn, Pa., caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball, while hounding Fitzgerald throughout the Tar Heel victory.
