From Press Release

Bucknell head lacrosse coach Randall Goldsborough has announced four captains for the 2013 season. Seniors Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) along with juniors Char Damico (Haverford, Pa./Baldwin School) and Sophie Kleinert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) will take on leadership roles this season.

Hurwitz, Wendling and Kleinert also served as captains last year, and they will be joined by Damico, a defender who is working hard to come back from a season-ending knee injury suffered early in the 2012 campaign.

Damico started seven games for the Bison as a freshman in 2011 and was once again a starter on defense last season before suffering the injury prior to the Manhattan game on Feb. 18.

“Char has been down a very tough road these last 10 months,” said Goldsborough. “Due to the injury, she never had a chance to exhibit her abilities on the field and obviously that frustrated her immensely. What impresses me about Char is her ability to stay focused on the big picture. She is determined to work overtime to get back on the field, and she has deeply connected with each of her teammates. She is a very driven person and I know she is going to bring a style of leadership to our program that will elevate our success both on and off the field.”

Hurwitz has developed into one of the team’s go-to offensive players over the last two seasons. She tied for the team lead with 29 goals as a sophomore in 2011, and then last season she set career highs in points (41) and assists (16) while scoring 25 goals. She had a four-goal, three-assist game against Presbyterian and recorded at least one point in 14 of 17 games.

“Madi has been a very consistent leader from day one since I began coaching here over a year ago,” said Goldsborough. “Her enthusiasm for lacrosse and for her teammates is very contagious, and the team feeds off of her vocal leadership every day. I’m very excited to have Madi back as a leader on this team for a second year in a row.”

Kleinert is a versatile midfielder who contributes offensively, defensively, in transition and on draw controls. She scored a career-high 13 goals last season, including hat tricks against Presbyterian and Lafayette. She also recorded 19 draw controls and 17 ground balls.

Wendling has played in more games than any active Bison player. She has started all 50 of the team’s games over the last three seasons, playing both defense and midfield. Last season she recorded three goals and four assists while ranking second on the team in draw controls with 54. She also collected 18 ground balls and forced 13 turnovers. Wendling pocketed a career-high seven draw controls in a wild 16-15 win over Liberty and had six each against Penn State and Colgate.

“I’m very excited to have these four student-athletes lead our program this season,” said Goldsborough. “Each of these young women brings different styles of leadership both on and off the field, however, all of them are very confident in themselves and their teammates and want push the team to compete at a level possibly never seen before here in this program. I have the utmost respect for Madi, Adrienne, Sophie, and Char, and know that, together, we will be successful on many levels throughout the season.”

The Bison captains will be tasked with leading a relatively young squad through a treacherous 2013 schedule that includes three non-conference opponents ranked in the preseason top 20 by Face-Off Yearbook. Bucknell opens the campaign at home on Feb. 16 against a Stony Brook team that finished 14-5 a year ago and is ranked No. 18 by Face-Off Yearbook.

That will be followed by a six-game road trip, starting with dates with preseason No. 9 Penn State and No. 16 Johns Hopkins. They Bison will also take on George Mason, George Washington, Patriot League foe Colgate and Presbyterian on that road stretch.

On March 16, the Bison host Patriot League power Navy at Graham Field. Lafayette and Holy Cross are the other Patriot League squads that will visit Lewisburg this spring. Bucknell also has non-league home games against Duquesne and Saint Bonaventure from the Atlantic 10 as well as Saint Francis (Pa.).

The Bison will visit Marist on Saturday, Apr. 20 in a final tuneup before the Patriot League Tournament, which will be held Apr. 26 and 28 at the home of the top seed.

“I’m very excited about the competitive level of our schedule for 2013,” said Goldsborough. “Starting off with three of the top teams in the country will really help us set the tone for Patriot League games beginning in March. I am a firm believer that your competition makes you better, both individually and as a unit. That said, it will be both challenging and exciting to compete and improve with each game. I’m looking forward to measuring our progress throughout the season.”

The Bison finished 5-12 with an all-underclass roster last season. This year Bucknell returns virtually its entire roster, including 30-goal scorers Arriana Sajjad, Katelyn Miller and Emiky Kookogey.
