Penn holds third spot in IWLCA Rankings; West Chester is seventh in Division II

The Northwestern Wildcats, the five-time reigning national champions, continue their residency on top of the IWLCA rankings as the first weekly poll is announced by the organization.

The ‘Cats again earned all 20 first-place votes in the preseason poll and lead a contingent of four teams from the American Lacrosse Conference in the rankings, including Penn State, who was the week’s fastest riser, moving up four spots to land at No. 14.

The Ivy League has two top-10 institutions in No. 3 Penn and No. 9 Princeton; Dartmouth (No. 16) and Cornell (No. 20) both dropped a spot from last week.

Division II

The Adelphi Panthers, ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, won their opening game of the 2010 season and hold on to the top spot in the first weekly poll for the year. All ten teams remained in the poll from the preseason. Lock Haven holds at No. 2 while C. W. Post, who had been tied with the Lady Eagles, drops a notch to No. 3.

The PSAC continues to lead all conferences with four schools, starting with Lock Haven. Mercyhurst follows at No. 5, with West Chester at No. 6 and Gannon closing out the poll at No. 10. The Panthers of Adelphi lead three schools from the NE-10 in the rankings, as 2009 NCAA participant New Haven comes in at No. 8 and Stonehill ranks at No. 9. The ECC has two schools, led by the Pioneers at No. 3 and followed by Dowling, which moved up to No. 6. Limestone from the Carolinas Conference comes in at No. 4.

Division III

The Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall, the 2009 NCAA Champions, continue to hold on to first place in the IWLCA rankings, but conference rival Gettysburg moved up to No. 2 with five first-place votes, while 2009 runner-up Salisbury earned four top nods and sits at No. 3. The same 20 schools remain in the rankings in the first weekly poll. Colby was the week’s fastest riser, moving up three spots.
