Hill School senior midfielder/attackman Dave Brown has signed a letter of intent to play next year at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC).
Brown, a native of Coopersburg, Lehigh County, said he took a careful approach in choosing UMBC.
“I tried not to rush the whole recruiting process rather than commit right away like others did,” he said. “I wanted to make sure I would be happy, athletically and academically and that I’d also be happy with the community.
“When I visited, coach (Don) Zimmerman was phenomenal and I got a vibe that the team is like a family. I felt like he’d be like my dad away from home; if I needed to talk to him about anything, I could come to him.”
Brown said he plans to choose between economics, sports management or sports medicine as a major.
“They have a lot of facilities and it’s close to Baltimore,” he said. “It’s a good academic school and a Top-10 lacrosse school. That was a bonus since I was looking for the academics first.”
Brown, who has played both for Duke’s Lacrosse Club and Twist Lacrosse Club, said the Blues are beginning to emerge after a rough start. They’ve won three straight games after starting 0-4 against a tough schedule that included Loyola-Blakefield and Boys’ Latin of Maryland, Brunswick School of Connecticut and Hun School of New Jersey.
“It was tough in the beginning,” said Brown. “We didn’t connect really well at first; unlike most other schools there is not much time to practice. We’re just thrown in there.
“We started shaky, but we’re feeling pretty confident right now. The defense is looking solid.”
Brown was recently moved from his customary midfield position to attack to better utilize his tablesetting skills.
“I got moved to attack because I can see the field well,: he said. “It’s an adjustment, but now I can manage the game a lot better.”
