From Press Releases
Junior goalie Emily Geary (Radnor) has been named a tri-captain for William and Mary in 2010, coach Christine Halfpenny announced.
The other captains named are senior Mary Zulty and junior Ashley Holofcener.
“I am excited to announce our captains for this season,” Halfpenny said. “They have proven themselves on the field and have built strong personal relationships with members of the team and the coaching staff. Their work ethic, commitment to excellence, and their TRIBE PRIDE are second to none.
“The team has had a smooth transition this fall as each individual has stepped into new roles, and I attribute this to the strong leadership that Mary, Emily and Ashley bring to the team. They are strong communicators, motivators and passionate about what we are creating and building this year.
“These captains will be complemented by an incredibly strong group of returning juniors and seniors. Our upperclassmen have an enormous amount of playing experience that will help our team continue to get closer to achieving our goals of winning the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament this year.”
After serving as a captain last season, Geary will assume the role again during the upcoming campaign. Having established herself as one of the CAA’s top keepers during the past two seasons, she ranked 23rd nationally with 9.0 saves per game and fifth nationally with 3.45 ground balls per game in 2009.
The impressive season followed up an outstanding freshman year in which she ranked fifth in the country with 193 saves en route to garnering numerous postseason honors.
An important contributor for W&M during the past three seasons, Zulty enters her senior year with 39 career starts after starting all 17 contests last spring. One of the top returning attackers in the conference, she ranked tied for fourth in the league last year with three game-winning goals. The Jarrettsville, Md., native finished the season with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists to go with 29 draw controls.
A preseason candidate for All-America accolades, Holofcener was a first-team all-conference and second-team all-region selection as a sophomore in 2009. The Baltimore, Md., native led the Tribe with 64 points (on 34 goals and 30 assists), as the total ranked sixth on the program’s all-time single-season list. Additionally, her 1.76 assists per game ranked 16th nationally, while her assist total ranked second on the College’s single-season list.
W&M returns nine starters from last season’s team that earned its second consecutive regular-season conference title and ranked 20th nationally in the final regular-season IWLCA poll.
