Newtown’s Whitney Douthett scored four goals and Holly McGarvie (Philly-based Ultimate Goal Club coach) added a pair as the United States raced to a commanding 22-5 victory over Ireland in today’s Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup quarterfinal game.

Player of the Match Caroline Cryer (Centennial, Colo./Duke ’09) had four goals, three assists and five draw controls for the U.S.. The game marked the first time that the U.S. and Ireland have met in international competition.

Ireland featured goalie Alex Kahoe, an Agnes Irwin School graduate from Villanova who starred at Maryland. She made 11 saves for the Irish.

The Irish gave the Americans a brief scare when they took a 4-3 lead early in the first half on Krista Pellizzi’s (N. Massapequa, N.Y./Maryland ’07) goal. After a timeout, Team USA stormed back with 15 unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Ten U.S. players put points on the board for the win. Lindsey Munday (2g, 6a) (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Northwestern ’06) and Katie Rowan (3g, 5a) (Delmar, N.Y./Syracuse ’09) led all scorers with eight points each. Goalie Devon Wills (3 saves) (Denver, Colo./Dartmouth ’06) anchored the U.S. defensively, and the Americans dominated the draw with a 20-9 advantage.

Lauren Cohen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Maryland ’08) led Ireland with three goals.
