It was a tough way to start a new season, but Archbishop Carroll coach Lorraine Beers found many positives when her Patriots opened their season today with an 18-8 loss to the top-ranked team in the nation, Vero Beach, Fla., at St. Petersburg.

Vero Beach is 14-0 and also is ranked No. 4 in the nation, according to MaxPreps. One of its wins was an identical 18-8 triumph over perennial Virginia powerhouse Sts. Stephen’s and Agnes.

The Fighting Indians went to an 11-3 halftime lead, but did not dominate, according to Beers.

“They were definitely fast and big, they’re good, no doubt about it,” she said. “But we should have converted on a lot more shots and we got a lot of draw controls. We only had 12 players since not everyone could make the trip down, so we had a lot of young kids playing.

“We did OK against them. hey did not dominate us, and if not for some momentum changes and the fact we had so few players it could have been different.”

Aimee Gennaro had three goals to lead Carroll while Genni Hull scored two and Hannah Schmitt had a goal and two assists. Sam Moore and Margo Lesher each scored once for the Patriots, who were ranked No. 4 in the Preseason PA Media Lacrosse Rankings.

Garnet Valley 18, Kennett 9

Tori Mitros had six goals and Allie Henry added four as the host Jaguars (1-1) breezed to the win.

Hallie Barnes added three goals for Garnet Valley and Kelsey O’Donnell, Kara Stroup, Allie Heavens and Jamie Snyder each had one goal. Erica Panichi had seven saves in goal as Kate Henwood picked up her first win as head coach.

Harriton 14, Institute of Notre Dame 9 (MD)

Carli Sukonik pumped in seven goals as the Rams improved to 3-0.

Jess Schwab had three goals and two assists and Caleigh Foust had two goals and one assist for Harriton, Betsy Hurtado added a goal and two assists and Maddy Pisani had one goal while Ally McLaughlin had an assist.
