Archbishop Carroll senior midfielder Bernadette Gennaro has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Iona College.

Last year Gennaro helped the Patriots win their 10th straight Catholic League crown before falling to Springfield-Delco in the state quarterfinals.

Archbishop Carroll's Brenadette Gennaro has committed to Iona

“I chose Iona because I like the fact that it’s a Catholic college and that it wasn’t too far from home, but I’m still able to get away,” said Gennaro. “Being one of seven kids in my family I need some time away from home!”

Gennaro, also a club player for Phantastix, will be coached by Michelle Mason at Iona. Mason.

Gennaro thanked Carroll and Phantastix assistant coach coach Lorriane Beers for helping in her development as a player.

“The only thing I was good for on the field my first year was running fast for long periods of time,” said Gennaro. “When I decided I wanted to stick with the game I learned stick skills, but I owe everything to coach Beers. She helped me get where I am now.”

Gennaro is the fourth Carroll girl to commit to a Division I school. She joins defensive midfielder Alyssa DiBona (Brown), goalie Nora McGeever (St. Joseph’s) and midfielder Hannah Schmitt (Loyola).

The Pats – who reached the state quarterfinals for the past two years – will again be the favorite in the Catholic League and also could challenge at the state level.

“Carroll is a great team coached by great coaches,” said Gennaro. “They have high expectations for us and we have standards to live up to.”

‘We lost some great seniors, but we’re still a strong team.”
