Downingtown West rising senior goaltender Dustin Keen has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at St. Joseph’s University.

Whippets (17-3) to a share of their first league title and a spot in the second round of the District 1 playoffs. Keen, who plays for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club, was also a member of the Philly team at the Under Armour Underclassmen Games this summer.

Keen, a High Honor Roll student, plans to major in business or pre-dental at St. Joe’s, where he will play for Pat Cullinan.

“I first visited a couple months ago and from the start I developed a bond with coach Cullinan,” Keen said. “He and my dad both grew up in West Chester and know a lot of the same people.

“I looked at some other schools, but when I went back I just felt most comfortable there. I thought it was the best for me athletically and academically it’s such a prestigious school.”

Keen, who will join Duke’s LC teammate Kevin Barrow (Avon Grove defenseman), said he will enjoy playing in the Colonial Athletic Association. St. Joe’s moves to the local league – which features Drexel, Delaware and Penn State – from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association this year.

“Being with the Duke’s, I know someone on every one of the schools in the CAA,” Keen said. “It will be fun to play against them.”

Keen said the 2010 season was a thrill for Downingtown West.

“We had a great team,” he said. “The seniors and juniors bonded so well and many of us had played together since 7th and 8th grades. We worked so hard and it showed with the 17-3 record and the league title.”
