From Press Release
The home team got on the board first, but the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse squad responded with five straight goals and never looked back Friday afternoon as the Blue Hens picked up their first win of the season with a 14-6 victory over host Monmouth.
Delaware (1-1), which opened the season with a 16-12 setback to No. 15 Georgetown last Saturday, received hat tricks from junior Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) and sophomore Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) and goals from seven different players in all.
Fay put up four goals on 12 shots for her sixth career hat trick while McCartney posted three goals on six shots for her eighth career and second straight game with a hat trick.
McCartney, the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, now has eight goals in two games this season. She also added four groundballs and three caused turnovers for the Blue Hens.
Also scoring multiple goals for Delaware were junior Abbie Hartman (North Penn) and sophomore Allison Hahn, who each recorded two. Hahn also posted two assists on the day.
Freshmen Alison Karwoski (Great Valley) and Shannon Hawley collected their first career collegiate goals while classmate Kara Dattellas picked up her second career goal.
Dattellas registered a game-high seven groundballs while leading the Hens with four draw controls. Senior Angela Biciocchi and junior Alex Alois joined Hahn and McCartney as each collected four groundballs for Delaware.
“As a program, we want to compete for sixty minutes,” stated UD’s third-year head coach Kateri Linville (Moorestown). “Today we were able to win both halves. Our performance improved in the second half. We attacked as a team, which allowed us to dictate the tempo and convert easy goals.”
Monmouth (0-2) picked up the first goal of a game from Allison Stathius on an assist from Emily Barbieri within the first minute of play. Less than four minutes later, the Hens responded with a 5-0 run and eventually ended the half with a 5-3 lead.
Delaware picked things up in the second half as the Hens put up nine goals on 16 shots while allowing the Hawks to just three goals on nine shots. The Hens outshot Monmouth by a total of 31-17 for the game and held the advantage in groundballs by nearly doubling MU’s total at 30-16.
Sophomore Alex Zaugra (Shawnee) registered eight saves in goal for Delaware to move to 1-1 on the year. Katie Donohoe took the loss for the Hawks by allowing 14 goals with 10 saves.
