Men’s lacrosse roundup; Lafayette cruises; Albright opens program with dramatic win

The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team controlled all phases of the game en route to a 19-2 victory over visiting Wagner on Tuesday night at Rappolt Field.

Sophomore Mike Galione had three goals and two assists while freshman Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) had two goals and three assists to lead a balanced attack for the Leopards (2-1) as 14 different Lafayette players contributed on scoring plays.

Senior Doug Prusoff added three goals while senior Will Heffernan (Haverford School) had two goals and freshman Cory Scheuerle (St. Joseph’s Prep) added two goals and an an assist. Goalkeeper Andrijko Andrusko (Holy Ghost Prep) made three saves to earn his first win of the season. Keegan Lawton (Bishop Shanahan) also scored once.

“I was really happy with the effort our team gave from the start,” head coach Terry Mangan said. “I also was proud of the way some of our younger players took advantage of their playing time tonight.”

Fairfield 10, Hofstra 9, 3 OT

Eric Warden (Garnet Valley) scored once for Fairfield (3-0) in its marathon win over the Pride.

Virginia 17, Mount St. Mary’s 5

Daniel Stranix (Ridley) led the Mount (1-1) with two goals and an assist.

Division III

Albright 12, Hood 11

Freshman Phil Potter had eight points and scored the deciding goal late as visiting Albright won its first-ever varsity contest.

With the game tied in the final five minutes, the Lions struck twice in a span of 62 seconds. Bryan Smith’s unassisted goal made it 11-10 Albright, and Timothy Holston assisted Potter with 3:38 remaining. The visitors hung on despite Ricky Orndorff’s goal with 32 seconds to play.

Potter finished with four goals and four assists in his first collegiate contest, and also picked up seven ground balls. Darian Meador contributed with eight ground balls and a 15-for-24 performance on faceoffs.

Scoring twice each were Andrew Poitras (one assist as well), Smith and Ryan Turner. Holston had a pair of assists.

The Lions’ power play performed well, scoring three man-up goals on five opportunities while also killing off both Hood opportunities. Smith scored on a man advantage to make it 1-1, Turner added a power play goal in the second quarter, and Potter added one as part of a furious third quarter rally.

Albright had trailed 7-2 and was later down 9-5 midway through the third quarter before the Lions ran off five straight goals to take a lead. Poitras, Connor Grant and Turner pulled the Lions within a goal, and Potter tied things up at 9-9 with his third goal of the afternoon. Jeremy Salmon’s (Great Valley) unassisted tally then gave Albright its first lead ever, 0:41 from the end of the third period.

Albright (1-0) now heads into its home opener, Saturday at 1:00 vs. Penn State-Abington. Hood is 1-3 on the season.
