Bayard Rustin senior defenseman Evan Weldon has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Quinnipiac University (Conn.).

Bayard Rustin senior defenseman Evan Weldon has committed to Quinnipiac

Weldon received second team All Ches-Mont honors in his junior season. During the summer he played club lacrosse for Team HEADstrong.

Off of the field Evan volunteers his time to help his mother, breast cancer survivor Sue Weldon, with her non-profit organization – Uniteforher.com – which promotes nutrition, education and wellness in the fight against breast cancer. On May 3, the Ches-Mont League game between Rustin and district rival Henderson, will highlight Breast Cancer Awareness and donation buckets will be going around with the proceeds going towards the cause.

Weldon, who takes all honors courses at Rustin, plans on majoring in film and media at Quinnipiac.

“When I went on my visit, I really enjoyed my experience,” Weldon said. “The facilities for my major were impressive and being able to play lacrosse there is an added bonus.

“My major offers you a lot of opportunities and internships with ESPN which is right down the road.”

Weldon, chosen for the adidas All-American Games in 2009, chose the Bobcats over Salisbury, Drexel, and Penn State among others.

The Bobcats are currently 4-4 and Philly alum, senior attackman Jack Oppenheimer (Germantown Academy), is third on the team with 15 points.

Weldon expects Rustin to improve this year.

“We’ve had a lot of coaching struggles during my time; we’re going on our third head coach in my fourth season,” Weldon said. “We have a lot of young guys on offense and we are working on getting them comfortable with the ball. We are trying to develop into a team that we all can be proud of.”
