Recent Malvern Prep graduate Dylan Spangenberg (midfielder) has committed to play Division III lacrosse next year at Ursinus College
Spangenberg helped the Friars claim a share of the Inter-Ac League championship
with Haverford School. He played club lacrosse for Team HEADstrong.
At Ursinus, Spangenberg joins a deep and talented list of Philly recruits for second-year Bears coach Jamie Steele. The others include Malvern Prep teammates Scott Hueber (attackman) and Mike Irvine (defenseman), Lower Merion’s Nile Thompson (midfielder) and Ari Weisband (defenseman), Bishop Shanahan’s Jordan McGinty and Jim Stanley (midfielders), Conestoga’s Dan Cohen (defenseman), Pennsbury’s Shawn Caven (midfielder/FOGO), Springfield-Delco’s Jordan Demcher (attackman), and Mechanicsburg’s Ercol Acri (Team HEADstrong club/midfielder).
Spangenberg, commended as a National Merit Scholar, plans to major in a math or science field.
“Ursinus was the first place I visited and it really drew me,” he said. “I really like the direction coach Steele is taking the program. I just see a positive future.
“And the school is great academically.”
Spangenberg said the highlight of 2010 was beating rival Haverford School twice.
“The two wins over Haverford were awesome,” he said. “I thought it was a pretty good job for our first year with two new coaches (Dan and Mike Keating).”
Spangenberg said he was happy to go to a school with two teammates.
“They (Hueber and Irvine) started looking about the same time, but they committed before I did,” he said. “It’s really nice to know couple guys that I’m friends will be going there, too. I think we all picked Ursinus for the same reasons; and awesome school with an awesome coach.”
