Bishop Shanahan senior midfielder Jordan McGinty has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Ursinus College.
McGinty was an Honorable Mention All-Ches-Mont League pick last year for the Eagles. He also competed in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Showcase and plays club lacrosse for Black Bear Elite.
McGinty will join a large list of Philly players that have committed to Ursinus and coach Jamie Steele: defenseman Michael Irvine and attackman Scott Hueber (Malvern Prep), defenseman Dan Cohen (Conestoga), defenseman Ari Weisband (Lower Merion) and attackman Jordan Demcher (Springfield-Delco). So far this year the Bears are off to their best start ever at 5-0.
McGinty said a big reason he chose Ursinus was the presence of Steele, the former coach at Widener who served as interim coach last year and was officially named head coach in the summer.
“He’s a great coach and I like the way he handles the team,” McGinty said. “He’s bringing in a lot of good players and I think the team will be real productive.
“I also love the campus. The team is really nice and I feel like I fit in. I didn’t want a big school.”
McGinty, who may major in Engineering, has made First honors this year.
McGinty is the third Shanahan senior to commit to a Division III college; the others are defenseman Jake Farrell (Susquehanna) and attackman Michael Thompson (DeSales).
Under first-year head coach Jon Heisman, who has had much success in the past at West Chester East and Sprngfield-Delco, McGinty believes the Eagles can be a factor in the Ches-Mont League race.
“This season we have really high expectations,” McGinty said. “We have a new coaching staff and a lot of starters back. We should be a lot better offensively. We need to stay consistent and be composed.”
