Conestoga junior defenseman Benn Karr has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Ohio State University.
Karr saw time in the playoffs last year when the Pioneers (24-2) won the first District 1 championship and advanced to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association finals. He then enjoyed a strong summer on the club scene, making the All-Star team at the Blue Chip 225 camp in Rhode Island and playing at the Nike Blue Chip camp at UMBC.
Karr played for the Duke’s L.C. 2 squad that reached the quarterfinals at Champ Camp. He also went to the Battle of the Hotbeds with Mesa Fresh 2011.
Karr missed his freshman season after suffering a broken leg during a freshman spring break skiing trip to Bolzano, Italy. He said he was fully recovered last spring; he also made the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Showcase last June.
Karr chose Ohio State over Johns Hopkins, Duke, Notre Dame, Hofstra, UMass, Army and Georgetown. He plans to major in History and minor in Graphic Design.
“I picked Ohio State because it was the best fir for me, as a person and a player,” he said. “I feel it fits my style of play. My style is physical, but also pretty aggressive.
“A lot of my games is in transition; clearing and bringing it up over the midline while creating fast breaks for the offense.”
Karr is now focused on preparing for the 2010 scholastic season. The Pioneers return a large amount of starters and have some other young players ready to fill spots from the few graduated seniors.
“We have most of our starters back,” he said. “This team has the potential. Last year we had the heart and this year we want it just as much. We got the silver last year; this time we want the gold.”
