St. Joseph’s Prep senior defender Bill Bonner has signed a letter of intent to play next year at St. Joseph’s University.
Bonner said he chose St. Joe’s to continue a positive path of Jesuit education.
“First of all I wanted to stay close to home,” he said. “St. Joseph’s is pretty close to home. I went to St. Joe’s Prep and this school has the same Jesuit ideals.
“I am going into the business program and it’s a good business school. I really wanted to be in the city and I liked the coaches a lot.”
Bonner, for now, will focus on helping The Prep take aim on the Catholic League. The Hawks return a number of key players and veteran faces as they start their first season under new coach Eric Gregg.
“I am real excited about the new season,” said Bonner. “We have returning guys in pretty much every position.
“The senior class is very close and we’re excited to play together for our last year.”
Bonner said the Hawks are confident they can contend with defending league and state champion La Salle. Last year St. Joe’s Prep gave the Explorers a big scare in the league championship game before losing, 7-6.
“Everyone always says it’s out of the question that we can beat La Salle, but we almost made it happen last year,” Bonner said. “We just know if we have a chance we’ll never give up.”
