The Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team captured its fourth-straight victory with a 14-8 triumph over Dickinson College on Saturday. The Garnet have won three-straight conference matches, currently occupying the second spot in the Centennial standings.
Karen Borbee (Penncrest/Delaware), head coach for 33 years, punctuated a significant conference victory with her 300th career win. The coach has gotten her team off to its best start in recent history, opening the season with an outstanding 10-2 mark.
Annabel Stifler had the hot hand today, tallying six goals and one assist to set a new career-high in points and goals. Claire Long and Kate Fox (Strath Haven) also contributed with three-goal efforts, while Carly Rodrigues-Reilly and Aubree Daugherty each scored once to round out the scoring.
Fresh off Wednesday’s 19-save performance, Brooke Carrier (Central High) picked up where she left off with 12 saves against the Red Devils. The junior has recorded double-digit saves in three-straight contests for the first time in her career. Amanda Morris also had an excellent defensive performance, causing three turnovers and collecting five ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
– Dickinson held the edge after the opening quarter, outscoring the Garnet 4-3. Stifler and Daugherty scored back-to-back goals in the period, while Fox added a game-tying score in the final minute. However, the Red Devils scored once more in the final seconds to take a slight edge after the opening 15-minutes.
– The Garnet flipped momentum in the second quarter, blanking the Red Devils with a 5-0 advantage. Stifler scored three-straight times to open the stanza, while adding another goal in the final seconds. Fox was responsible for the other Swarthmore tally as the Garnet built an 8-4 cushion. Carrier made three saves in the quarter, while her teammates outshot their opponent 8-5.
– Early in the third, Swarthmore built on its advantage with three more goals. Fox, Stifler and Long all scored on the powerplay to increase the team’s total to eight-unanswered scores. Dickinson began to claw back towards the end of the period with three goals in the final seven minutes. The Red Devils were previously held scoreless for 23-minutes.
– Carrier was excellent in the fourth quarter, making four saves to extinguish any Red Devils momentum. Rodrigues-Reilly and Long opened the period with goals, before Long responded with a final score after Dickinson’s lone tally of the quarter.
