Anna Maria Gragnani had four goals, Bridget Finley (Villa Maria Academy) had three goals and an assist and Bea Buckley (Penn Charter) had two goals and an assist as the Drexel women’s lacrosse team defeated host Delaware 12-10 on Friday night. The Dragons improved to 7-2 and 2-0 in CAA play, while Delaware fell to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Fr Delaware, freshman Grayson Buono (Radnor) had five dra controls and a caused turnover and Erin Gormley (Springfield-Delco) had four draw controls and a two caused turnovers.

The Blue Hens opened the game with a goal just 39 seconds into the contest. Delaney McDaniel found Morgan Gore down the middle for the score. Drexel responded five minutes later. Buckley tossed it over the net to Finley who finished the play. Buckley followed that tally with a goal of her own. The sophomore raced around the net and spun off the Blue Hen defender for the tally. Delaware matched with a free position goal to tie things back at two apiece.

Drexel put together a pair of goals in 35 seconds. Gragnani helped the Dragons get back in front at the 2:57 mark. The redshirt senior took it from the top of the alley and spun by her defender to hit the back of the net. Finley quickly added another for her second of the day. The Blue Hens took advantage of a women-up situation. Ella Rishko (Cape Henlopen) faked a pass and turned the corner to bring the Hens to within one. The Dragons closed the quarter with two goals in the final minute. Allison Drake and Finley both collected a goal to take a 6-3 lead.

Delaware began the second with three consecutive scores. Halen Saroney (2G, 1A) split both of her defenders and fired it in for the goal. The Blue Hens earned their first back-to-back, with Jaclyn Marszal (2G, 1A) getting home at the 6:55 mark. Marszel picked up her second straight with a no looker to bring the score back even, 6-6. The Dragons ended the half with a pair from Buckley and Finley to take the 8-6 lead.

The Blue Hens scored twice in the third to tie the game at eight with just under eight minutes to play in the frame. Sam Paradise scored her 12th goal of the season with 12:07 left to play. Five minutes later, Lulu Rishko (Cape Henlopen) tied the game at eight.

Drexel scored a goal to finish the third quarter on top, 9-8. Gragnani scored an unassisted goal to end the quarter. It took Gragnani just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter to score once more. The Dragons extended their lead to three one minute later after Kate Marano received a pass from Finley and took a shot on goal.

The Dragons’ lead grew to four after Gragnani scored her fourth goal of the night with 6:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Gragnani’s season total grew to a team-high 34 goals.

Delaware scored twice in the final two minutes to pull within two of Drexel. But a costly turnover with 25 seconds remaining sealed the victory for Drexel.
