Drexel scored the final six goals of the game and rallied to defeat Lafayette at Vidas Field on Tuesday night, 12-10. The Dragons trailed by four with 13 minutes to play, but came from behind for the win. It was the first victory for Drexel Head Coach Steve Boyle. Conor Hooley finished the game with three goals and three assists, while Caden Zadell also had a hat trick.
Drexel (1-1) scored the first four goals of the game. Hooley started the scoring with a man-up goal five minutes into the game. Zadell and Jack Nolan added first quarter goals as the Dragons dominated the first stanza. They outshot the Leopards, 16-4 in the first. Hooley set up Alex Tulio (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) for his first career goal early in the second quarter. That would be the last goal for Drexel for a span of almost 20 minutes.
Lafayette (2-1) got on the board at the 9:50 mark of the second when Riley Sullivan found Jack Irish (Malvern Prep) for a goal. The Leopards added three more to end the first half, two coming from Nicholas Blalock, to tie the game at 4-4.
Lafayette opened the second half with a pair of goals to take a 6-4 lead, the second one coming on the man-up. Hooley answered with an unassisted score, but the Leopards scored three times in a span of less than four minutes to take a 9-5 lead late in the third quarter. Drexel finally broke its scoring drought after the Dragons beat a 0-man rid. Goalie Drew McGill found Witt Crawford down the field and the sophomore fired a shot into the open net from the left side. The momentum lasted all of 30 seconds as Aidan Kopen (Haverford School) extended the lead back to four with 13 minutes left. That was the last goal the Leopards would record as Drexel rattled off six straight.
Crawford started the run with his second of the day. Less than a minute later Hooley picked up his third of the day cutting the lead down to two. Liam Kammar was next as the senior raced through the middle of the field and picked up his first of the season. Zadell would score the next two goals, completing his first career hat trick, and giving Drexel the unlikely lead at 11-10 with a little more than five minutes to play in the contest.
Drexel picked up an insurance goal with 91 seconds left in the game. The Leopards once again put the 10-man ride on. While it was effective for the majority of the game, the Dragons made Lafayette pay. Pat Lyman fired a shot from three quarter field into the empty Lafayette net, giving Drexel a 12-10 lead and sealing the game.
Hooley tied his career-high with the three assists and six points. It was the first multi-goal game for Zadell. Aidan Shortley had his second solid performance in his new role as Drexel’s starting face-off man. The senior won 11 of his 18 attempts and had a team-high seven ground balls. Sam Di Trolio (Garnet Valley) also won 4 of 5 faceoffs for the Dragons.
Nicholas Blalock (Hill School), Kopen and Joseph Duggan each scored two goals, Sullivan handed out four assists and Clifford Chapman (Hill School) scored once to lead the Leopards. Joe Doherty (Malvern Prep) made 15 saves in the cage. Drexel outshot the Leopards, 44-25 and won 16 of the 25 face offs.
Penn 14, Albany 8
The 16th-ranked Quakers got out to a quick start and never looked back, defeating the Great Danes at Franklin Field.
The Quakers scored twice in the first four minutes and held a 5-1 lead late in the first quarter. UAlbany got as close as one, at 5-4 in the second, but Penn reeled off four straight goals and six of the next seven and were never seriously challenged after that.
Penn improved to 1-1 with the win, while UAlbany fell to 0-2.
St. Joe’s 12, Monmouth 3
Ben Dutton tallied five goals and the Hawks (1-3) never trailed in a rout of Monmouth at Sweeney Field.
