USC sophomore Annie Shields (Mount St. Joseph Academy/Fort Washington, Pa.) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
This is the first-ever Big Ten weekly award for the Trojans, as they are competing in their inaugural year. The award comes at the forefront of a weekend sweep, as they took down California, 17-6, in Berkeley, Calif., and No. 21 Colorado, 15-6, at the same venue.
Shields anchored the net on the defensive side, posting 19 saves and allowing 12 goals this weekend. The sophomore added to her stat sheet four ground balls in the two victories. Shields was a deciding factor against No. 21 Colorado, as set a new career high in saves with 12, six of which came in the fourth quarter.
BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
Hanna Bodner, Marquette (Academy of Notre Dame/Haverford, PA), Sr., M
At Central Michigan, Bodner scored three goals which marked the second hat trick of her career. She also had one ground ball and one draw control. Against Louisville Bodner scored one goal in addition to four assists, two ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Leslie Iorio, Villanova, Fr., M
In a 1-1 week for the Wildcats, Iorio had six goals, one ground ball and one draw control. In Villanova’s 14-10 win over Saint Joseph’s, she scored four goals. Her other two goals were against then-No. 16 Navy (L, 17-16).
PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Racheli Levy-Smith, Holy Cross, Jr., Defender, Margate, N.J./Ocean City
*Levy-Smith registered 23 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in a week where Holy Cross held both opponents to single-digit goal totals in a pair of wins.
*She recorded 16 draw controls and two ground balls in a 16-8 win over Albany.
*The junior defender added a career-high 13 draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls in an 18-5 victory at Iona.
