Academy of the New Church has named assistant Shane Sturgis as head boys’ lacrosse coach, athletic director Jackie Pennink announced Friday.

Sturgis, a former Downingtown East, and Penn State standout, has been Jack Forster’s assistant at ANC for the past six years. Forster recently was named head coach at La Salle.
Sturgis also coaches with Duke’s Lacrosse Club Elite.
Pennink said Brian Wolchok, director of the New Jersey Lacrosse Club, will be the assistant coach.
A 2010 Downingtown East grad, Sturgis was a two-time All-EPLSA selection who also earned All-Phillylacrosse.com First-Team honors as a junior. He had 59 goals and 45 assists and led the Cougars to the District 1 title game (the first PIAA-sanctioned season). He was also a member of the Cougars’ 2007 state title team (under the PA Scholastic Lacrosse Association).
\He earned USILA Honorable Mention All-America and All-CAA First-Team honors his senior year at Penn State in 2014 when he collected 33 goals and 17 assists. He had 97 goals and 61 assists in his PSU career and ranks No. 7 in all-time scoring.
Sturgis later played for the Boston Cannons and the New York Lizards of Major League Lacrosse.
