Masterman senior Jawad Challoub said his team was highly motivated by a near-miss in last year’s Public League semifinals.
“The success we had today was because we weren’t playing for ourselves, we were playing for our team and our coach,” said Challoub after his Dragons defeated Central Friday, 10-7, for the Public League boys’ crown at the Germantown SuperSite. “Last year we came close to playing in the finals but we came up short, and lost 6-5 in the semis to Boys Latin.
“But this year we came in with a chip on our shoulders, especially me and the guys that played last year. We could have been there last year – we should have been there last year.
“We had to do it this year!”

Thanks to six goals from Challoub, a Widener commit, the Dragons won their first Public League crown in only their third year as a joint team, called MSC (combined players from Masterman, Science Leadership Academy, and Carver School of Engineering and Science).
Challoub tied his own school record with the six goals and finished the year with 37 goals and 16 assists. After falling behind 2-1, in the first period, MSC (13-2) seized control of the game and closed the season with an 8-game win streak.
“After the second quarter we clicked and started making our shots,” Challoub said. “We made better passes and got the groundballs. We did our fundamentals.
“Being a combined school, we all play a major role and without that, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”
Also scoring for MSC was Max Linneman, Nathaniel Sears, Josh Cohen, and Lachland Pepersack while Jared Way-Gregory won all but two faceoffs.
