No. 16 Princeton took the field for the first time in almost 2 full years and made quite an impact with a 17-11 win at No. 10 Virginia.
Tiger Notes
It had been 715 days since the Tigers had last played a game, and 722 days between wins.
10 different players had at least one point for Princeton, including six who found the scoresheet for the first time in their careers.
17 goals ties the most by a Princeton team against Virginia. Princeton also had 17 in a 17-10 win in Charlottesville on Feb. 25, 2017.
Head coach Chris Sailer (Haverford High) is now 30-5 all-time in season openers.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Fish made 15 saves, one off her career high.
Kari Buonanno tied her career high with four goals.
McKenzie Blake (Haddonfield) – the 2021 Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year – had a hat trick, four groundballs and two caused turnovers in her first career game.
Maria Pansini (Agnes Irwin, the 2018 Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year – had a goal and a draw control.
Sophie Whiteway, Nina Montes and Ellie Mueller (Radnor) each had one goal in their first career games.
Senior defender Marge Donovan scored her first career goal in her 45th career game, adding 5 draw controls, 2 caused turnovers and 2 ground balls.
Donovan now ranks No. 8 all-time in draw controls by a Tiger with 107.
Kyla Sears had two goals, moving into sole possession of the No. 6 spot on Princeton’s all-time scoring list with 209 points.
Fpr UVA, Rachel Clark (Conestoga) had two groundballs and a draw control.
Drexel 16, Lafayette 4
Karson Harris sank a season-high six goals in the Dragons’ dominant victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
Zoe Bennett was lights out for the Dragons (3-0) in net once again, recording seven saves for her third victory. Callan Fritsch saw nine minutes in net against the Leopards, adding three saves of her own.
Drexel consistently outpaced Lafayette offensively, coming out on top in total shots 26-21 (21-14 SOG).
Cpronne Bednarik (Downingtown West) collected two goals, two grundballs and a draw control.
The Dragons continue to be a dynamic offense, marking their third-straight game with scores from six or more players.
Maura Cissel was key for the Dragons at the opening draw, securing a team-high seven draw controls.
Harris drove the offense with seven goals and an assist. The grad midfielder also picked up three ground balls, three draw controls and forced one of the eight caused turnovers by the Dragons.
Belle McHugh (Academy of the New Church) was a brick wall for the defensive unit, leading the team in several categories including ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (4). The junior defenseman’s four caused turnovers marked a new career-high.
