From Press Releases

Drexel scored eight second half goals and came back from a three-goal deficit to beat Penn State, 13-11, to advance to the CAA title game against No. 1 UMass on Saturday night.

Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) and Robert Church each scored three times as the Dragons earned a berth in the championship game for the second time.

Senior attackman Matthew Mackrides (malvern Prep) scored his 100th career goal and junior midfielder Nick Dolik tallied a career-high four markers for the Nuttany Lions. With two markers, Mackrides netted his 100th and 101st career goals to become just the fifth Nittany Lion in program history to reach the century mark. The Newtown Square native now sits in a tie for fourth place on the program’s all-time list.

The loss snapped the Nittany Lions (9-6) five game-win streak, while Drexel improved to 8-7. Mark Manos (Salesianum School) had nine saves for the Dragons.

5/2/13 – Boys’ lacrosse: Hatboro-Horsham clinches tie for league title

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/13

Ben Cellini scored three goals and Marc Poust made 18 saves as Hatboro-Horsham clinched at least a tie for the Suburban One Continental Conference boys’ lacrosse championship today by defeating host Central Bucks East, 11-10.

The Hatters (11-3 overall) are 10-0 in the league with two games left, having beaten CB East (12-3, 8-2) twice.

Ryan Higgins (2 goals, 1 assist), Zach Erwine (2 goals), Jimmy Murphy (1 goals, 2 assists), and Jimmy Durkin (1 goal, 2 assists) also led the Hatters’ offensively. Connor Kreston and Matt McPoyle each had one goal apiece.

Matt Heim had two goals and an assist and Matt Milici and Matt Schmidt each had two goals for CB East.

“The kids played their tails off,” Hatboro-Horsham coach John Kurek said. “We went in with a game plan, but the kids are really something special this year.

“They really play hard, they really play for each other. My hats are definitely off to them.”

5/2/14 – Boys’ lacrosse: La Salle tops St. Joseph’s Prep in game suspended from Thursday

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/14

Mitch Soufleris and Zach Drake scored fourth-period goals today to break a tie game suspended after three quarters a day earlier, leading host La Salle to a 7-6 victory over St. Joseph’s Prep in a battle of Catholic League leaders.

La Salle (7-5 overall) took over first place with a 7-0 mark. The Prep (9-4) is 6-1.

“Every time we play St. Joe’s Prep it’s a very competitive game,” said Drake, a junior committed to Lehigh. “We’ve lost a couple one-goal games to Malvern Prep and Hill Academy so it’s nice to get one.

“At the same time it’s a regular-season game and we have to keep moving on and put it in our back pocket.”

The game was halted due to lightning after a high-scoring third period when the Explorers rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four goals. The offense continued today with the help of freshman Anthony Giuliani, who won all four face-offs and finished 12 of 16 from the X.

5/2/15 – Freedom Conference championship: @Eastern_MLAX wins 4th straight crown

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/15
From Press Release

Eastern University Men’s Lacrosse claimed its fourth Freedom Conference Championship in a row with a 22-7 rout of the Misericordia University Cougars on Saturday. With the win, the Eagles earned the automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles, ranked No. 20 in the nation, will join 31 of the nation’s top teams in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday.

This is the first time the Freedom Conference has had an NCAA automatic bid. Two years ago, the Eagles defeated Misericordia in a very similar championship game (22-6) but ended up not receiving an invite to the NCAA Tournament.

This year, the season continues thanks to an offensive onslaught. The Eagles fired off 60 shots compared to the Cougars’ 26. Midfielder Desmond Decker and senior attackman Grant Ferguson carried out five-goal rampages. Ferguson, who now has 49 goals on the season, earned the Championship Most Outstanding Player award.

Senior Eric Waibel (Avon Grove) scored a hat-trick for the seventh time this season and Bryan Goetz added two goals. Seniors Andrew Travers, Kyle Gillam (Sun Valley), Cody Ridgway (Methacton) and David Darling all scored once, sophomore Tim Lamb added a goal and so did freshmen David Hipp and Jake Billera. Darling dealt out five assists and became the first Eastern player to ever reach 100 assists in his career. The amazing thing about that is that Darling only had eight total assists his first two seasons.

5/2/17 – .@Fords_Lacrosse rallies for key @InterAcBoysLax win over @EAboyslacrosse

Johnny Nostrant

Johnny Nostrant has had a front-row seat to Inter-Ac League games since, well, pretty much forever.

That’s the perk to having your dad be the coach of one of the league’s longstanding powerhouses in Haverford School, but the younger Nostrant has never seen the league with such balance. Three teams entered Tuesday’s action tied for first place, something that rarely happens in one of the country’s top leagues.

“Never,” said the Penn State signee. “My dad’s been coaching for a while and I’ve gotten to see every single year, and it’s really the first year where there’s competition in every game that you play.”

5/2/19 – Ursinus stuns top-seeded F&M, 12-11, to advance to Centennial Conference finals

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/19
From Press Release

They just keep finding a way.

The Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team’s incredible season will see another chapter after the Bears came back from several multi-goal deficits to knock off top-seeded and host Franklin & Marshall, 12-11, Wednesday and punch their ticket to the Centennial Conference championship game.

Junior Ben Minardi (Perkiomen Valley) scored with 21 seconds remaining to put the finishing touches on another thrilling victory over the Diplomats and sent Ursinus into a Saturday showdown at No. 2 Gettysburg with a conference title on the line. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Battlefield. Gettysburg defeated Dickinson, 15-13.

Much like the regular-season meeting, a 16-15 overtime barn-burner, Ursinus (12-3) dug itself a big early hole before fighting all the way back and dealing the Diplomats a devastating late blow.

The Bears trailed 6-2 midway through the second quarter but continued to chip away and eventually took their first lead with 14:20 to play. A blocked shot on an F&M extra-man chance led to a breakout in transition, and junior Bobby McClure (Haverford High) found a cutting Hakan Atillasoy (Harriton) for a top-shelf shot and a 9-8 edge.
