Shipley School Mark Duncan sounded like the winning coach.
His seventh-seeded Gators were eliminated from the National Prep Championships Thursday night in the first round, but they held their own against second-seeded and mighty Hill Academy (Ontario), bowing 16-8.
“It was great to see our guys get out there and compete against one of the top teams in North America,” he said. “Hill Academy is a fantastic squad that is very well-coached, a lot of top tier players going to big time schools, they’re basically a ‘pre-NCAA team.’
“To see our guys go out there and work hard and put up 8 goals, especially after last weekend’s FSL Championship game loss, is something to build on for next season and a testament to what we’re building at Shipley. It was a great event and we look forward to doing better next year.”
Shipley – which had only two seniors playing regular roles – finished 13-5 and was runner-up to Academy of the New Church in the Friends Schools League.
On Thursday, Luke Grayum had two goals and an assist and Jake Olejniczak and Randall Brown each scored twice. Josh Gallia and Henry Reed each scored once while Nate Yi posted 9 saves and Kyle Mezrow had 3 saves.
