Junior defender Katie FitzPatrick (Merion Mercy Academy) of the Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league offices on Monday. This is FitzPatrick’s first weekly honor of her career and marks the fourth different Stag to pick up a weekly award this season.
FitzPatrick played one of her best games of the season in the 14-6 win over Manhattan. Her stat line included seven groundballs, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. She was part of a back line that held the Jaspers to just 15 shots and forced them into 19 total turnovers.
On the season, she has started all 16 games for the league leading Fairfield defensive unit. As a whole they lead the conference in goals against average (8.77) and caused turnovers per game (10.75). FitzPatrick has scooped up 31 groundballs this season and has caused 14 turnovers thus far.
Fairfield continues their season this Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. at the 2017 MAAC Championship Semifinals where they will face No. 3 Marist on ESPN3.
