After four losses in the championship game, George Washington finally had its day Wednesday.
The Eagles got a combined 11 goals from Connor McMonagle and Phelan Sweeney and defeated Frankford, 16-4, for its first Public League playoff championship at Northeast High. GW (16-3) won the round robin tourney championship played in the league’s first season, in 2010, and then fell to Northeast each of the first four years of the playoff tournament.
McMonagle had six goals and two assists and Sweeney added five goals and one assist. Matt Woods and Adrian Toro each had two goals, Nick Caraccio added a goal and two assists
“The seniors on the team that have been with me since their freshman year have gone through three consecutive championship losses until last night,” said GW coach John Creighton. “Every year we set a goal for this program and as a team we accomplished our goal of winning a Public League Championship.
“The student-athletes, parents, assistant coaches all deserve credit for their part in this championship run. I am very proud of this George Washington lacrosse team and excited for our first city championship game on Friday.”
The defense was led by junior goalie Joey Hajduk (three quarters, five saves) and senior goalie Avery Harris (one quarter, one save); senior defensemen Christian Gonzalez Chris Graham, Bob Haxhiu and Tim Bradley and sophomore defenseman Alex Horwood; senior LSM Jonald Kembaci, senior defensive midfielder Desean Santiago and junior defenisve midfielders Harry Hua and George Hubbard.
GW will meet Catholic League champion St. Joseph’s Prep on Friday at 6 p.m. at Northeast High for the District 11 title. The winner advances to the PIAA tournament.
