The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team gave up a crucial goal with 5.9 seconds remaining in regulation as No. 19 Towson University rallied for a 12-10 overtime victory against the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium in the Colonial Athletic Association opener.
The two-time defending CAA champion Tigers opened the game with four unanswered goals and led, 6-1, at halftime. UD regained its composure in the second half, immediately going on an 8-1 run to take a 9-7 advantage with 1:51 remaining.
Towson (6-5, 1-0 CAA) would not back down as Taylor Moore pulled the Tigers within one with 49 seconds on the clock.
The Blue Hens (7-4, 0-1 CAA) held the ball behind their own net in the waning seconds before Kelly McQuilikin caused a Delaware turnover, collected the groundball and was able to put the ball at the back of the net to tie the game at 9-9 and force overtime.
Towson continued to control the overtime period, scoring three straight goals to go up 12-9.
Delaware senior Abbie Hartman (North Penn) put the Hens on board with a goal at 1:23, but it was too little too late as the Blue Hens’ six-game winning streak came to a halt.
The Blue Hens held the advantage in groundballs, 20-15, and went 14-for-15 in clear attempts.
Sophomore Shannon Hawley led Delaware with a career-best four goals. Junior Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood added three points off of two goals and one assist in addition to two draw controls.
Yale 8, Lehigh 7
After falling behind 5-1, the Mountain Hawks battled back on two occasions but couldn’t get over the hump as Yale prevailed. Senior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick was stellar, finishing with 12 saves including stopping six-of-seven in the second half. A trio of Lehigh players scored two goals apiece to lead the offense.
“I thought we had a strong effort, especially in the second half,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “I thought our defense really stepped it up. Their one play (Nicole Daniggelis) was really hard to stop and did a tremendous job. We got better on her as the game went on, but we just ran out of time.”
Fitzpatrick made several tremendous saves early on and keeping it going for the entire 60 minutes.
“Alex just keeps making great saves,” said Redfern. “She can really stop some high-level shooting. It’s such a boost for our defense.”
Junior Carli Sukonik (Harriton) and freshmen Krista Dampman and Allison LaBeau each scored two goals for the Mountain Hawks while senior Chelsea Retaleato added the other.
Florida 13, Penn State 9
After trailing by a seven-goal margin at the end of the first half, the No. 10/11 Lions’ second-half rally fell short in a setback against No. 4/5 Florida. The loss snapped the Nittany Lions’ (7-4, 2-1 ALC) five-game winning streak, while the Gators improved to 12-2 overall (3-0 ALC).
Sophomore midfielder Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md./3g), who netted at least a hat trick for the third straight game and fifth time in 2014, and junior midfielder Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J./2g, 1a) led Penn State with three points each. Junior attacker Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) extended her point-scoring streak to 38 games (79-66–145) with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.), who tied Cyr with a game-high two caused turnovers, added a goal and collected a team-high two draw controls.
