Bailey Martin scored the game-winner with 3:41 to play Saturday as Salesianum School (DE) edged Chatham (N.J.), 5-4, in the Checking for Cancer Invitational at Haverford School.

The win was the fifth in a row for the three-time defending Delaware state champion Sals (5-1), who also defeated Chatham (4-3 record) in OT two years ago at this event.

Junior goalie Ryan Kern (14 saves) was named the team’s game MVP. Kern said games against out-of-state teams are critical for the Sals, who have begun to establish themselves as a perennial national power.

“It’s a really big win any time you beat anyone out of Delaware,” said Kern, headed to the Naval Academy. “We want to show people we play hard and play intense.”

Jason Kelly led the Sals with three goals and Martin had two goals and an assist. Freshman Mike Drake had the assist on the game winner.

“I think first couple games we needed to fix a few things,” said Kern. “Now everyone on the midfield is forcing slides and getting the ball to Jay (Kelly), Bailey and Sam (Fink).”

Will Barnett led the Cougars with two goals and an assist. Senior defensenan Danny Winschuh (Princeton) had six take aways and was named MVP.

Winschuh was proud to compete in an event (five boys’ games and five girls’ games) that has raised over $200,000 to fight men’s cancers (prostate, testicular, colon) and create awareness for early detection.

“It’s a really good cause,” he said. “We came out and played hard. It was great competition all around.

“We played them two years ago, so we know they are strong. It went their way, but we played well. We had trouble clearing in the first half, but we came together and worked hard and got back in for a good fight.”
