From Press Release
Delaware Valley College is proud to announce that Ramona Walters of Syracuse, N.Y., has been named the first head coach in Aggie women’s lacrosse history.
“I would like to thank athletic director Steve Cantrell and the entire department for this opportunity, Walters said. “I am eager to introduce a strong, competitive lacrosse program into an already thriving athletic and academic community.
“This is an exciting time for DelVal as it aims to grow its already impressive history by attaining university status and expanding its academic offerings, and I am thrilled to be part of the school as it moves forward.”
Walters, whose coaching position is full-time, joins Delaware Valley just two months after it announced the addition of five NCAA Division III sports (women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis). She will spend the 2013-14 season recruiting and putting together a program that will first hit the field for intercollegiate competition in the spring of 2015 (a women’s lacrosse club has existed at the college in recent years).
Walters has coached at the Division III level for six years, including a three-year stint as the head coach of North Carolina Wesleyan College (Rocky Mount, NC). She took over the program after it went through a two-year hiatus of competition and had four players earn all-conference honors from 2010 to 2012.
Walters spent last season as a full-time assistant coach at Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY) and work primarily with the defense in addition to recruiting, film editing and academic support duties. The Bombers went 12-6 and was a game shy of reaching the NCAA Division III playoffs as they fell in the Empire 8 Championship Game.
Walters served under head coach Shannon McHale at Ithaca where they earned Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year honors. McHale was also her coach when Walters was a four-year standout at St. John Fisher College (Rochester, NY). She earned all-Empire 8 honors all four years as a midfielder/defender with the Cardinals and graduated from the institution in 2007 with a degree in psychology.
Following graduation, Walters spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at St. John Fisher.
“We are delighted that Ramona has accepted the exciting opportunity to head up a new women’s lacrosse position at Delaware Valley College,” Cantrell said. “She brings head coaching experience as well as the recruiting knowledge and special passion for the Division III level, and we are confident that she will build the program into one that all Aggie followers will be proud of.”
