Philly girls’ club teams head to LAX for the Cure; event raises money for breast cancer

June 27, 2013 by Chris Goldberg

More than 200 teams and 4,000 players will compete in the the LAX For The Cure Summer Tournament Friday through Sunday at New Egpyt High School, NJ.

The event has two purposes: to provide a highly competitive tournament that brings many college coaches (at least 150 are expected); but more importantly to raise both awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. Funds raised go to the North, Central and South Jersey Affiliates of Susan G. Komen.

Last year $238,000 was raised by teams and partners, breaking the previous year’s fundraising record. The tournament also drew a record 164 coaches and recruiters. In the tourney’s six-year existence, over $1 million has been raised for Susan G. Komen’s New Jersey Affiliates.

Much of the funds go to programs that offer breast health, breast cancer screening, education, treatment support and outreach. Other funds go to to national breast cancer research programs in search of a cure.

According to the Lax For The Cure website, the tournament was the initial concept of Jessica Shoulberg, Mendham High School Coach, Director of STEPS Lacrosse and Director of the Lax By The Sea tournament. During the summer of 2007 the STEPS Lacrosse club had three mothers fighting breast cancer.

Shoulberg believed that the growth of girls’ lacrosse and the summer tournament circuit would meet the ideals of players, parents, clubs, and college coaches in raising funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer in a highly competitive field.

Age groups include 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019-20.
