The Cabrini College men’s lacrosse team advanced to its 12th consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship game with Tuesday’s 18-3 win over the Centenary College Cyclones at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The victory, the Blue and White’s 112th consecutive over a CSAC opponent, improves the Cavaliers to 14-2 on the season.

Freshman Damian Sobieski (Avon Grove) tallied career bests with five goals and seven total points. Senior Bobby Thorp added five points, while freshman Mike Leyden (Haverford High) posted four.

Both teams took some time to feel each other out, as the scoresheet remained blank for the first 12:40 of the game.

Goaltender Erick Zarzecki, who leads the nation in goals against average, allowed just three goals while posting nine saves.

The Cavaliers’ defense caused 15 turnovers, led by John McSorley’s (Ridley) season high six.

DiNenno sparked the Cavaliers’ attack, winning 15 of his 19 faceoff chances.

Junior Cameron Gunn led the Cyclones (6-9) with a pair of goals.

The Cavaliers will host Gwynedd-Mercy College in Saturday’s league championship game. The Griffins advanced to the final after posting an 11-4 win at #2 seed Marywood.

Cabrini defeated the Griffins 20-3 in the 2010 CSAC championship game and scored a 20-6 win at Gwynedd-Mercy last Saturday.

Gwynedd Mercy College 11, Marywood 4

Gwynedd-Mercy will play for the CSAC Championship as a stellar defensive effort allowed the third-seeded Griffins to defeat second-seeded Marywood in a semifinal matchup.

GM (10-5) will play at top-seeded Cabrini in the title game on Saturday with a time TBA.

The Griffins, who lead 5-3 at the break, yielded just one goal in the second half.

With the teams tied at 3-3 late in the second, Gwynedd scored the next eight goals over a quarter and a half, with the final one coming with 2:57 left in the contest. The Pacers added the game’s final tally, with just over a minute in the contest.

Senior Nick Coan (Garnet Valley) recorded a game-high six points on a career-high four goals and two assists. Junior Roy Bakeoven (Archbishop Ryan) and sophomore Nathan Pendleton each had two scores as the Griffins will play in their second CSAC Championship in its four years of varsity competition.

Junior goalie Ryley O’Keefe (Bishop Shanahan) anchored the defense, making 10 saves, six of which came in the fourth to help keep Marywood at bay.
