Malvern Prep senior midfielder/attackman Matt Neeson has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Denison University (Ohio).
Neeson was a contributor at defensive midfield last year on a Friars team that tied with Haverford School for the Inter-Ac League championship. He plays club lacrosse for Rebel Elite.
Last year Denison went 10-4 under coach Mike Caravana, falling to Cabrini, 10-7 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Caravana was inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame this summer.
Neeson, an honor student, plans to study Economics.
“I got a letter from him (Caravana) over summer and went out to visit and the campus blew me away,” said Neeson. “I was amazed at how great it looked, and during my visit I just fit right in with the players.”
Neeson is excited about the recent hiring of former Princeton assistant David Metzbower as the new Malvern Prep coach. Metzbower – an assistant at Haverford School last year – replaces Dan Keating, who resigned last month to pursue a college coaching career.
Neeson said he knows Haverford School may come in as the favorite next year due to its high number of returnees that have committed to Division I colleges. But last year Malvern Prep swept the Fords, and he believes that confidence can carry over.
“I am really looking forward to the season; we have a great coach,” said Neeson. “We did lose a lot of seniors, but they (Haverford) lost some good kids, too. We think we can be really competitive. We showed it last year.”
