Metzbower resigns as head lacrosse coach at Malvern Prep to return to college game

Malvern Prep head coach David Metzbower, who had spent over two decades as a Division I college assistant at Princeton and Delaware, has resigned to pursue a college position.

Metzbower informed his players on Thursday. In his two years at Malvern Prep he posted a record of 22-16. His highlight was taking the Friars to the Inter-Ac Invitational finals in 2011 when his club nearly shocked eventual national champion Haverford School before bowing in overtime.

Last year the Friars had an up-and-down season, finishing 8-10 overall and reaching the Inter-Ac semifinals where they fell again to Haverford School.

Metzbower said the difficult decision was made only because of his desire to return to college coaching. He expects to be accepting a position in the coming days.

Metzbower is the third Malvern Prep coach to leave in four years. He had replaced Dan Keating, who left after guiding the Friars to a share of the Inter-Ac crown in 2010 to take an assistant coaching job at Lehigh University. Keating (now an assistant at St. Joseph’s University) had replaced longtime coach John McEvoy.

Metzbower – a 1986 Delaware graduate who was an assistant there from 1987-89 – served as an assistant coach at Princeton from 1990-2009 under the legendary Bill Tierney. He was associate head coach at Princeton from 2004-09, and during that time he was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator and goalie coach.

Metzbower, who was inducted into the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2010, was an assistant under John Nostrant at Haverford School in 2010.
