Conestoga junior goalie Robbie Zonino has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Michigan.

Robbie Zonino log:

Robbie Zonino

High school: Conestoga

Position: Goalie

College choice: Michigan

Club affiliations: Duke’s Lacrosse Club

Major lacrosse honors: Starter on 2011 state championship team, member of Team Philly at Under Armour Underclassmen Games, Gait Fab 40 MVP at Philly Showcase, 2010, named as No. 35 Rising Junior Young Gun by Inside Lacrosse; ESPNRise goalies to watch from class of 2013; ESPNRise player of the week, March 2011 for game against Boys’ Latin; Rookie of the year, Conestoga Varsity – 2011.

Also considered: Georgetown, UMass

Intended major: Business

Why did you choose Michigan? “Michigan is a top academic school with an amazing support system so that all student athletes can thrive there and that was really important to me. Michigan has made a tremendous commitment to their new lacrosse program not only by bringing in top level players, but by building brand new lacrosse facilities as well. It will be exciting to a part of a new program and I am hoping to have an impact right away to help bring the team to a championship level like so many of their other sports. Most importantly, Coach (John) Paul and his staff are just terrific and right away made me feel like I was already a member of the team and part of the Michigan lacrosse family.”

Other info: Rising sophomore attackman Jeff Chu – a Conestoga grad – is playing at Michigan, which comes to Philly next month to compete at the Nick Colleluori Classic at Ridley. La Salle junior defenseman Stefan Bergman recently committed to Michigan.

Outlook for 2012 HS season: “We should have a strong season. We have a lot of returning players so we are hoping to make a serious run at a third straight championship. We have a great schedule this year so we should be ready for any tough opponent.”

Other comments: “I would like to thank all of my coaches that have helped me over the years, from my youth CYL coaches to my club team, the Duke’s coaches, Ebe Helm, John Christmas and their entire staff, and of course my high school coaches, Brian Samson and his staff. I would not be where I am today without each and every one of them.”
