The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team will aim for its 11th straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship after routing visiting Immaculata, 23-3, today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Senior midfielder Paul Skulski (Garnet Valley) led the Cabrini attack with five points, pairing two goals with three assists. Junior midfielder Joe Arrell (Springfield-Delco) notched four points with three scores and one helper.
Cabrini (11-5) will host Marywood University – a 14-4 winner over Gwynedd-Mercy College tonight – on Saturday in the finals. Game time is to be determined.
Senior attackman Jordan Coeyman (New Hope-Solebury), junior attackman Brian Hill (Ridley), sophomore attackman Jeff Crosby and sophomore midfielder Bobby Thorp each contributed three points for Cabrini, netting two goals and adding one assist.
Sophomore midfielder Andrew Layne (Malvern Prep) and freshman attackman Louis LaCour both totaled two points with one goal and one assist. The Cavaliers’ offense out-shot Immaculata, 64-26, and boasted 21 players with at least one point in the win.
Cabrini also won the groundball battle by a convincing margin, 56-28. Senior defenseman Steve Heaps and senior midfielder Joe Strain led the charge, each scooping a team-high five groundballs.
Strain led the Blue & White in face-off circle, winning 4-of-7 draw attempts. Senior Mark Hamilton went 2-for-3 at the X.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki started his 34th straight game in the cage for the Cavaliers and recorded five saves for his 26th career win. Freshman Steve Oppenheimer came on in relief, playing nearly 12 minutes and posted two saves.
Cabrini out-shot IU in the first quarter, 14-4, and led 4-0 following 15 minutes of play. Arrell’s first goal of the game at the 11:20 mark of the second quarter pushed the Blue & White’s lead to 6-0.
Yet, the Mighty Macs closed the first half on a 3-2 run and trailed by just five goals at the intermission, 8-3. Thorp led the Cavaliers’ attack at the intermission with two points on two goals.
Cabrini opened the second half with a man-down goal from Hill and never looked back. Crosby netted two goals in the third period and the Cavaliers owned a comfortable 14-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Arrell pushed the Blue & White lead to 16-3 with 12:37 remaining. Several reserves saw action late in the game, including LaCour, freshman midfielder Pat Nolan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) nd freshman midfielder Charles Stephens, who each scored their first career goal in the final stanza.
Mike Boyd (Perkiomen Valley), Chaz Gorman (Great Valley) and Joey Shallow (Lower Merion) each scored one goal for Immaculata (6-9) in the season-ending loss. Mike Nesci added one assist.
Jon Diodati (Henderson) tallied 15 saves for IU.
The victory extends the Cavaliers’ win streak against CSAC opponents to 103, including the postseason, since the 2001 campaign. Also, the victory stands as the 149th in the career of 11th-year head coach Steve Colfer.
