St. Joseph’s Prep senior long stick midfielder Will Farrell has committed to play Division I lacrosse at St. Joseph’s University.
Farrell was a First Team Catholic League Southern Division pick last year when he helped the Hawks finish 12-8 and record wins over Episcopal Academy, Malvern Prep and St. Anthony’s (N.Y.). He plays club lacrosse for Bucks Select.
While at St. Joe’s Farrell will study Business with a focus in Marketing.
“The biggest reason I signed with St. Joe’s was to play Division I lacrosse and they offered the best opportunity,” he said.
Staying in the city of Philadelphia and his familiarity with the Hawks roster made the decision for Farrell easy. There are five former Prep players – junior Bobby Hurley and sophomores Ian Correia, Ted Hospodar, Brian Brinkmann and Bill Bonner – at St. Joe’s University and Prep senior Rob Watts also has signed with St. Joe’s University.
Locally, SJU has made a haul in the Philly class of 2011. The Hawks will bring in five others from Philly: Avon Grove defenseman Kevin Barrow, Malvern Prep attackman Mike Dougherty, Downingtown West goalie Dustin Keen, Penncrest defenseman Dylan O’ Donnell and Unionville long stick midfielder Rich O’ Neill.
Farrell is one of seven Prep seniors to sign or commit to play Division I lacrosse. Besides Watts, Connor Dent (defenseman) signed with Bryant University, Jeff Heath (midfielder) signed with Delaware, Brad James (attackman) committed to High Point, and Jake O’Brien (face-off specialist) and Cory Scheuerle (attackman) signed with Lafayette.
This year Farrell has his teams’ expectations set high. The Hawks figure again to vie with seven-time Catholic League champion La Salle for the league title and lone state playoff berth from District 12.
“Our goal is to win Catholic league and go to state playoffs,” Farrell said. “We all have been working hard and the seniors really want this.”
