Visiting Drexel broke open an 8-7 game by dominating the fourth period and claimed a 15-8 triumph over UMBC today in men’s Division I action.
It was a huge day for Drexel’s Philly grads. Owen Knight (Radnor) had four goals, an assist, and two groundballs, while Jack Joyner (Academy of the New Church) had two goals and two assists. Also, Ty Gougler (Springfield-Delco) had two goals, an assist, and a groundball, and Alec Tulio (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) had a goal, an assist, and four groundballs.
Meanwhile, goalie Brendan Donnelly (Germantown Academy) made 9 saves, and Luke Carden (Malvern Prep) led the defense with four groundballs, and Trent Layton (Academy of the New Church) won 12 of 26 faceoffs while Nate Bradley (Academy of the New Church) scooped one groundball. Also, Witt Crawford had three goals and an assist, and Caden Zadell had a goal and an assist.
Joyner put Drexel (2-0) up 9-7 to open the final frame, and after Jack Fish pulled UMBC (0-1) within 9-8, Crawford made it 10-8, and just 90 seconds later Knight made it 11-8. Fifty-one seconds later, Gougler added another, and Knight scored again to make it 13-8. Joyner and Gougler closed the scoring.
Drexel was the first to strike. Crawford received a pass from Tulio in front of the UMBC net and found the back of it after a spin move. UMBC answered with two goals to take the lead for about 40 seconds. Joyner found a wide-open Crawford with 9:09 left in the corner, who buried the shot in the upper-right corner and tied the game at two. Less than two minutes later, Gavin Kelly put Drexel ahead with a shot from 15-yards out. Kammar ended Drexel’s three-goal run with a transition goal with 7:28 remaining.
UMBC finally broke up the Drexel onslaught with 5:19 left, but Knight converted on a man-up goal with 3:21 remaining to put Drexel ahead by two heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a defensive battle, UMBC pulled within one with 14:12 remaining and then the game went without a goal until just under six minutes remaining. Knight scored his second goal of the game. With 4:07 remaining, Tulio and Joyner teamed up to put Drexel ahead by three at the half.
Drexel held UMBC scoreless for about 17 minutes before the Retrievers could get back on the board. Zadell scored a goal 1:15 into the quarter, before UMBC scored three goals to climb back into the game. Drexel and UMBC entered the final quarter separated by one goal, 8-7 in favor of Drexel.
