Colin French (Radnor) scored three goals and junior Connor Riley (Salesianum School) dominated the faceoff X (17 of 26) as the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 18 Michigan Saturday afternoon, 14-13. Lehigh improves to 2-1 on the season. The Wolverines fall to 3-1.
Later in the fourth with Lehigh trailing 13-12, Jack Archer rifled a shot in the back of the net to tie the game at 13. Then, with a little over four minutes remaining, Andrew Kelly (La Salle) found Peter Theodoropoulos for the game-winning goal.
Lehigh’s offensive attack was balanced. Luke Winkler and Finn Morgan also scored three times each in the win. Seven Mountain Hawks dished out assists, with Winkler leading the team with two.
Six Mountain Hawks caused a turnover in the win. Senior Richard Checo caused two, and picked up a ground ball. Checo now has 11 caused turnovers on the season, just three away from breaking the Division I record for caused turnovers.
In net for Lehigh was once again Kasey Heath, who had nine saves in this second win of the season.
The first quarter was dominated by the Mountain Hawks. French opened the scoring, putting Lehigh in front less than a minute into the contest. A little over a minute later, Luke Breslin found the back of the net. Later in the period, with Lehigh ahead 4-0, French scored again, giving the Mountain Hawks a 5-0 1st quarter lead.
Nick Roode opened the scoring in the second quarter for Michigan. Roode, along with Luke Shannehan, both scored three times, which led the Wolverines. Finn Morgan responded immediately. Morgan’s second goal of the afternoon gave Lehigh a 6-1 advantage early in the second period. Michigan scored five of the final six goals in the first half, with ahead 7-5 at the half.
Michigan was able to work back and eventually tie the score at eight with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Peter Debusschere put Lehigh back in front before Michigan scored two straight to end the period ahead 10-9.
Luke Winkler and Hunter Polonkey fired two quick goals early in the fourth quarter allowing the Mountain Hawks to retake the lead. The Wolverines quickly responded with two straight of their own to take the lead right back.
