The Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team battled toe-to-toe with No. 2 Maryland but ultimately fell, 17-15, on Friday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Kate Fuhrman totaled a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists for the Hawks (1-2), recording her 150th career point to move into a tie for 11th in program history. Alexa Capozzoli (Episcopal Academy) posted her second straight five-point outing with three goals and two assists and now sits one assist shy of the program record (110). She also moved into fourth all-time in career points (193).
Riley Miller extended her season-opening goal streak to four games, finishing with two goals. Kate Kaptrosky, Olivia McCloskey and Emma Yoder (Springfield-Montco) each added multiple goals.
Saint Joseph’s held advantages in shots (42-30), shots on goal (27-20) and draws (17-15). Maryland goalkeeper JJ Suriano recorded 12 saves, while the Hawks combined for three.
Saint Joseph’s is the only opponent to score double-digit goals against Maryland this season, with the Hawks’ two-goal loss marking the Terps’ narrowest margin of victory.
Maryland’s defense was anchored by Annabella Schafer (Hill School), who had two groundballs.
Maryland opened the scoring four minutes into the contest, but Megan Sanelli (Methacton) responded just 40 seconds later to even the score at 1-1. The Terps answered with four straight goals before strikes from Riley Miller and Kaptrosky trimmed the deficit to 5-3 heading into the second quarter.
Capozzoli scored early in the second frame to pull the Hawks within one, but Maryland countered with four of the next five goals. Capozzoli’s second tally in a six-minute span provided the lone Hawk strike during the run before she found Yoder with 10 seconds remaining in the half, sending Saint Joseph’s into the break trailing 9-6.
McCloskey opened the second half scoring to cut the margin to two, though Maryland scored on its next three possessions to build its largest lead of the afternoon. Fuhrman sparked a Saint Joseph’s surge, as five different Hawks scored during a 5-1 run that narrowed the gap to 13-12 with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. Maryland halted the rally with a late strike to carry a 14-12 advantage into the final frame.
Goals from Kaptrosky and Fuhrman twice brought the Hawks within one, but Maryland answered each time. After an eight-minute scoreless stretch by both sides, the Terrapins capitalized with 2:39 remaining to extend their advantage to three. Fuhrman completed her hat trick with 1:09 left, but the Hawks’ comeback bid fell short in a hard-fought 17-15 defeat.
