The No. 16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish remained undefeated as they took stunned host and No. 3 Boston College, 12-9, today as freshman Maura Irish (Episcopal Academy) collected two goals, two assists and five draw controls while sparking a 6-0 run to end the game.
Notre Dame is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, and sure to move well up in the national rankings after starting this week at No. 16. BC, No. 3, is a shocking 0-2 to start the season and 0-1 in the ACC.
With senior Marissa White (Agnes Irwin) scoring a team-high 3 goals, BC seized a 9-6 lead to close the third period. But the Fighting Irish and Maura Irish took over in the final frame.
“I’m proud of this team and the way they have been working to realize their potential,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Chris Halfpenny. “It was a quick turnaround from opening weekend to today, and this team was ready for the challenge. I can’t say enough about the combo of this freshmen class and our returning group. We’re all having a lot of fun.”
The Irish were also led by freshman Grace Maroney, recording her first career hat trick in the win. She was followed by Meghan O’Hare, Kate Timarky, and Madison Rassas with two goals apiece. Timarky also led the team with three ground balls.
Freshman Uma Kowalski finished with four draw controls and graduate student Julia Carr finished with a team-best two caused turnovers. Freshman goal keeper Ceci Patterson recorded eight saves and her third win of the season.
Rassas opened the fourth period with a goal off a feed from Irish and then scored again to make it 9-8. She was followed by Maroney’s third goal of the night to tie it at 9-all with 11:14 remaining.
M. Irish dished it to Charley Bacigalupo to put the Irish back in front for the first time since the first period. M. Irish followed with another goal of her own to make it 11-9.
Leading by two with just under two minutes left, Timarky sealed the deal as she rebounded the ground ball on a missed shot to cap off the win.
