From Press Release

Pitt women’s lacrosse delivered a statement win in its home opener Thursday afternoon, pulling away for a 17-10 upset over No. 14 Duke at Highmark Stadium to stay unbeaten on the season.

“I am really proud of the team in terms of execution,” said Pitt (2-0) head coach Emily Boissonneault. “We had a bit of a lull in the third quarter, but we knew what we needed to do to make the changes and got back to where we needed to finish the game out strong. Any win is an important win, and for this program I think this one is a little more special.”

The Panthers showcased a balanced offensive attack, netting 17 goals, the most goals Pitt has scored against the Blue Devils in program history and the most goals Duke has ever given up to an unranked team. Seven different Pitt players found the back of the net in the win.

Maureen McNierney and Kaitlyn Giandonato (Great Valley) led the charge with four goals each, while Avery Moon and Paige Telatovich (Bethlehem Freedom) both added a hat trick of their own. Giandonato also dished out two assists to finish with a team-high six points in the victory. The Panther defense was led by Megan Sheridan (Archbishop Carroll), who had four caused turnovers and two groundballs. Gigi Leonzi (Parkland) had a goal and an assist, while Lainey McGonagle (Episcopal Academy) also was a key on defense.

Duke got a goal, two caused turnovers, a groundball and a draw control from freshman Quinn Whitaker (Episcopal Academy).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Pitt came out hot, as McNierney scored three times in the opening quarter, helping the Panthers jump out to a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes. The momentum carried into the second frame as Pitt added four more goals to build a 7-3 advantage at the half.

Duke threatened in the third quarter with four-straight goals to bring the game within two, but finishes from Moon, McNierney and Telatovich kept the Panthers in front heading into the final period.

The Panthers put the game away in the final fifteen minutes, closing the game with four-straight tallies to advance to 2-0 on the season for just the second time in program history.

Molly Cain played all 60 minutes in goal for the Panthers and made eight saves to anchor the defense. Pitt also finished perfect on clears, finishing 19-for-19, and held a narrow draw control advantage, 16-13. Aidan Carr picked up 10 draw controls herself, the fourth-best mark by a Panther in program history.
