Maite Jayo collected four goals, an assist and two draw controls, while goalie Addi Stein posted 11 saves as visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh toppled Upper Dublin, 9-6, today in a battle of the two leaders in Suburban One American Conference girls’ lacrosse.
PW (13-1 overall, ranked No. 6 in the state in 3A) is 8-0 in the conference Upper Dublin (10-4) falls to 7-1. The Colonials have three games left in the conference, vs. New Hope-Solebury, William Tennent, and Hatboro-Horsham as they chase their first title since 2018.
“It was a great team effort from the girls today against an always very good Upper Dublin team,” said PW coach Ellen Reilly. “PW worked very hard and fought all over the field. The draw was a little difficult today, but we really hustled to gain possession.”
Riley Martin added two goals for PW, while Gracie Kerns (1g, 1a, 1 DC), Grace Harvey (1g, 3 DC), Ellie Coyle (1g, 1a, 1 CTO), Kai Jayo (4 CTO), and Soph Nagle (3CTO) made huge contributions.
“The PW Defense stepped up, with an excellent game by our goalie, Addi Stein,” said Reilly. “We had a game plan going in to try and stop their main scorers, Bridget DiMartile and Maeve Hogan.
“Esther Backentose and Soph Nagle executed the game plan and held them to just 3 goals. Our other defenders who also played well were Keira Whelan, Kai Jayo, Maite Jayo, Gracie Kerns, and Grace Harvey.”
For Upper Dublin, Abby Rucker (2g, 4dc) and Maeve Hogan (2g, 2dc, including the 100th goal of her career) paced the attack.
“Offensively, we were composed and worked the ball around, looking for opportunities,” Reilly said. “Five different players scored. We shared the ball and found the open player. We lost focus in the fourth quarter, and UD capitalized, scoring 4 goals. We were lucky to have a couple goal lead that helped cushion UD’s attack.”
