Wings’ comeback falls short in 19-14 NLL defeat to first-place Buffalo; Monday night home game is ’90s night

The visiting Philadelphia Wings saw their four-game NLL win streak end Saturday night, dropping a 19-14 decision to first-place Buffalo.

The Wings (4-2) made a valiant comeback in the final period, scoring six straight goals to pull within 16-13 of the Bandits (5-0), but they never got closer than the three-goal deficit.

Buffalo’s powerful offense dominated as an early third-quarter goal from Neumann University grad Chase Fraser (3G, 4A) gave the Bandits a 14-5 lead. Holden Cattoni (3G, 5A) and Phil Caputo (2G, 1A) scored to draw the Wings within 14-7, but Frazer and Josh Byrne (7G, 5A) made it 16-7.

The Wings responded with the 6-goal spree – led by Cattoni with two goals and two assists – while Joe Resetarits (2G, 6A) assisted on four of the six tallies. Cattoni’s third goal of the night made it 16-13 early in the fourth period.

Ian MacKay gave Buffalo a 17-13 lead before Mitch Jones (2G, 5A) pulled the Wings within 17-14. But the Bandits tallied the final two goals.

Sam LeClair had three goals for the Wings and Blaze Riorden had two goals and two assists. Phil Caputo also tallied two goals and Philadelphia’s league-leading power play was a perfect 3-for-3.

Defensively, Connor Sellars grabbed 10 loose balls for the Wings while Scott Dominey picked up nine and caused three turnovers. Nick Damude made 35 saves on 49 shots in 49:17 of action, while Deacon Knott contributed eight saves on 13 shots in 10:43. The Bandits took a total of 62 shots on goal, which was just five fewer than the Wings franchise record of 67 that Buffalo took in March of 2024.

The Wings look to rebound Monday evening when they host the Vancouver Warriors at 5:00 at Wells Fargo Center.
