The host Villanova women’s lacrosse team had advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Saturday for the first time in program history after whipping UConn, 16-10, tonight.
Jillian Vaught scored a game-high three goals and Juliet Walls (Haddonfield) and Cate Gallagher both tallied four caused turnovers, with Gallagher adding six saves and six ground balls. Also, Madison Freeman (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) had two goals and Emma Verhoest controlled six draws.
The Wildcats (11-6) will meet #1 Denver in the Championship at 11 a.m. at Villanova Stadium.
Elena Torres was the first to score with 14:02 left in the first quarter. Sami Carey then found Vaught. At 10:53, Carey scored unassisted and later Sophia Corretjer passed to Vaught who made it 4-3 at the end of the quarter.
Leslie Iorio converted a Rose Christie pass and Freeman scored with 11:18 on the clock to make it 6-3 ‘Cats. Corretjer made it 7-3 before the Huskies pulled within 7-5 at the half.
Vaught scored only 19 seconds into the second half and Bella Piselli (Episcopal Academy) made it 9-5. The ‘Cats soon converted three free position goals in a row to seize a 14-6 lead.
