Bryant Maits (West Chester East) had five goals and two forced turnovers and Liam Drake (Allentown Central Catholic) scored four goals, while Keegan Billie (Bishop Shanahan) posted 10 saves in goal Wednesday as visiting Widener earned its first win of the year in a 13-6 conquest over Gwynedd Mercy College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffins opened the game with two goals by Josh Devine (Owen J. Roberts, 3G), but Maits cut the lead to 2-1. Matthew Shingle (Strath Haven, 9 of 11 FO) snagged a faceoff win before the Griffins forced a turnover and sent some tough shots on Billie, who kept it 2-1. Drake put up his first goal of the game with 2:03 remaining before Ian Kish (Bethlehem Catholic, 3G) made it 3-2.
Cole Blum (Lenape-NJ), 8 of 10 FO) opened the second with a faceoff win to set up the Pride in the attacking zone. Maits tallied his second goal with a Samuel Haverstrom assist. A minute later, Drake scored his second to take a 4-3 lead. A quiet portion of the quarter would be broken with a Maits forced turnover on a clear attempt and a Jacob Shannon (Downingtown East) ground ball which led into Maits’ hat trick. Haverstrom ended the half with one of his own as the Pride took its first lead at half in the season. The score was 6-3.
The Pride continued to dominate the faceoff as Blum won another right out of half. Matthew Marino (Kingsway Regional-NJ) scored within the first minute of play before a Griffins goal at 9:24 broke the Pride scoring run but the Pride answered 30 seconds later with Matt Buckley (Moorestown-NJ) finding net. Drake went on to put up a hat trick with a CJ Lane (Marple Newtown) assist with 7:00 remaining. A quick turnaround would show Maits and Marino adding to the stat lines. Drake and Maits ended the quarter with another goal apiece to make the score 13-4 in favor of the Blue and Gold.
