The Villanova women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Marquette 15-8 on Sunday afternoon, improving to 9-4 and 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Wildcats had 21 draw controls with 13 going to Emma Verhoest. Maddy Stoddard and Katie Clark tallied four caused turnovers. Elena Torres led the team with four points and two assists and Sami Carey had three goals and three assists. In goal, Cate Gallagher had six saves.
Rose Christie had two goals and an assist, while also collecting five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
In the first quarter, the Golden Eagles were the first to score, but the ‘Cats then went on a nine goal run started by Christie with 5:25 left on the clock. Carey helped Christie net another ball. Torres then earned a free position and scored. With less than a minute left, Leslie Iorio scored of a Christie feed, putting the Wildcats up 4-1 going into the second.
Torres scored off another free position to start the second quarter. Jillian Vaught found Carey and then Sophia Corretjer netted back to back goals to extend the lead to 8-1. Madison Freeman (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) scored the last goal for the Wildcats of the half at 6:26.
The Golden Eagles were led by Hanna Bodner (Academy of Notre Dame), who had four goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Meg Bireley netted two goals. Bodner had her seventh hat trick of the season and increased her season total to 37 goals.
