PLA Golf Outing raises $28,000 to support lacrosse in the Philadelphia region

October 29, 2025 by Chris Goldberg

From PLA Press Release

The 33rd Annual Philadelphia Lacrosse Association Golf Outing was held on October 20 at Spring Ford Country Club in Royersford. The event featured 80 golfers and 60 corporate and individual sponsors. Participants were treated to colorful fall foliage and scenic vistas on a blustery autumnal day. The event is expected to raise over $28,000.

Mike Murphy, former head coach at Penn for 16 years, attended the event as the PLA’s special guest, and spoke about his recent involvement and new role with Harlem Lacrosse and opportunities to continue supporting the growth of the game in the City of Philadelphia and elsewhere beyond traditional venues.

Coach Murphy acknowledged the help and support of the PLA during his time in the region, where his coaching career took off at Haverford College – a power in the Centennial Conference every year under his tenure. Also in attendance was Chris Goldberg, who founded and operates Phillylacrosse.com, and two Eastern PA Lacrosse Hall of Fame Inductees, Class of 2025: Bob Mongeluzzi and Brett Manney.

The golf outing supports the PLA’s nonprofit mission to promote the game in Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania. Outing proceeds help the PLA to do the following:

*Support the PIAA Public Lacrosse League and youth and middle school programs in Philadelphia and beyond (including Eyekonz, Harlem Lacrosse, Little Quakers, Youth Mentorship Program and others);
*Support the PLA Stick Stringing Project,’ which refurbishes and/or donates sticks for the benefit of programs in the City and Greater Philadelphia;
*Organize/underwrite the Eastern PA Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, the most of recent of which took place October 21st at Springhaven Country Club, as well as other award recognition banquets and events;
*Conduct/sponsor high school and youth coaches’ clinics; and
*Promote diversity and inclusion in the sport.

The PLA Golf Outing this year was held in “In Loving Memory” of dear friends in the lacrosse community who passed away since the 2024 golf classic last October, including the following: Bill Bergey, Stuart “Stu” Brown, Billy DeMaio, Kevin “KT” Donohue, Zachary Leo Drake, William Craig Miller, Noah Snyder and Stephen Garrett (Yarnie) Yarnall
